• Featured Article - "The Audit: An Opportunity for Improvement"
Summer has us hopping at HELLIER. This newsletter issue will bring you up to date with some exciting developments, introduce you to Bill Norton, and (again) say farewell to a familiar face at Hellier.
Thanks for your time, and enjoy.
Hellier Employee Highlight - Bill Norton
Bill Norton began his career at Hellier on April 1, 1991. The number of students that he has taught since then is in the thousands. He is tireless when he teaches and frequently will be found coaching individual students that require additional attention well after normal working hours. Prior to coming to Hellier, he held positions at United Nuclearand Bestco.
Bill's qualifications are unique. He holds ASNT Level III certificates in VT, PT, MT, UT, RT, ET, NRT and LT. One of his most interesting assignments for Hellier was on a small island 700 miles west of Hawaii known as Johnston Atoll. JACAD (Johnston Atoll Chemical Agent Disposal) was a location where hazardous chemical weapons from the 2nd World War were taken to be disposed of. He provided the oversight for the re-examination of a large number of welds that had been improperly radiographed during construction inspection. Subsequently, he would serve as an expert witness when this project resulted in legal action against the contractor and the radiographic company that did the original radiography.
In his role as Senior Instructor and Level III for Hellier, he has provided services in Saudi Arabia, Germany and most of the States. The list of companies where he has presented training courses are impressive. The Nuclear Regulatory Agency, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Los Alamos National Laboratories, National Air and Space Administration, Pratt & Whitney, and the US Department of Energy are just a few.
On a personal note, Bill is the father of three grown children; two daughters and one son. He frequently drives one of his three motorcycles to the Hellier training center in Niantic, Connecticut. His ambition and dedication to NDT and his work at Hellier is exceptional. He is an example of a true Level III!
USNRC CONTRACT IS AWARDED TO HELLIER
In June, Hellier received a five year contract to provide specialized NDT training courses for the US Nuclear Regulatory Agency. This marks the fifth time Hellier has been successful bidder and will continue to host the courses at the Hellier Northeast training center. Subjects to be presented include the major NDT methods and the ASME NDE Code requirements.
CHUCK HELLIER RETIRES (AGAIN!)
June 30 marked the last "official" day of Chuck Hellier's full time position with Hellier. He retired earlier in June of 2003 but returned in 2006 to support the growth of Hellier. He will remain with Hellier on an "as needed" basis and will continue to provide his expertise where needed. On his second retirement, he recently stated that "retirement for me is only a transition but not a termination of my NDT career". He plans to finish his second book which will be co-authored with Dave Culbertson, "Case Histories in NDT - When Things Go Wrong". He will continue to lecture at various conferences and meetings. He also plans to continue the Management Seminars, team teaching with Jim Treat who recently retired from Acuren (the 2nd time)!
HELLIER NORTHEAST MOVES TO NEW LONDON, CT
After over 20 years in their Niantic, CT facility, Hellier Northeast will be moving to their new location at 1 Spar Yard Street, New London, CT. This location will provide for more floor space with expanded classroom and laboratory facilities. The location is unique in that it is in the historic section of New London known as "The Whaling City" in earlier days. The Thames River is within a few feet of the new facility and students will have the ability to walk through the downtown area and have a number of choices for their lunch breaks. The move is expected to take place during the week of September 1 and the school should be in full operation the following week. Directions will be posted on the Hellier website at: www.hellierndt.com. There will be an open house in the Fall and details will be forthcoming in a future issue of the newsletter.
